SmartGeo - Effective Geography teaching and learning based on Smartphone and Tablet Apps

We all have them and they are omnipresent in our everyday lifes: smartphones and a wide range of apps. Apart from communication and information these powerful devices provide enormous resources for learning about our local and global environment. Integrating GPS tools they even link information with spatial patterns and allow us to understand relations and locations in the context of spaces and places.

Based on best practice examples developed at Freiburg Universities we have initiated some empirical research projects to learn about how effective the implementation of Smartphone-apps in the teaching and learning process is and how to improve our tools.

The project focusses on developing best practices SmartGeo-Apps and to bring about empirical findings evaluating the applications in the context of Geography learning for different target groups.

The natural environment of Bangladesh and the people living in the country will be confronted with aggravating problems due to various external and internal forces. Supposed effects in the context of climate change scenarios and population pressure might hamper efforts to bring about positive socio-economic developments of the country.

The research activities are related to the impacts of Land use - and Climate Change, Migration and the Educational System.

Klimawandel in Bildungskontexten

Eine weitgefächerte Implementierung und Stärkung der Klimaschutzthematik im Bildungskontext ist vor dem Hintergrund des unbefriedigenden „Ist Zustandes“ dringend geboten. Vielfach beschränken sich Aktivitäten und Angebote auf gutgemeinte Einmalaktionen wie beispielsweise Projekttage, Baumpflanzaktionen oder Ähnliches. Auch im Geographieunterricht finden überlebenswichtige geowissenschaftliche Fragestellungen aufgrund schrumpfender Stundenkontingente meist nur unzureichende Berücksichtigung. Aktuelle Unterrichtsbeobachtungen, die zum Teil in der fachdidaktischen Forschung dokumentiert sind, lassen erkennen, dass quasi in allen Altersgruppen zum Teil recht vage und persistente Alltagsvorstellungen zum Themenkomplex Klimawandel vorliegen, die sich oft nur in Ansätzen (oder gar nicht) mit den wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen decken. Dies gilt nicht nur für die Schülerinnen und Schüler, sondern auch für die in der Ausbildung befindlichen Lehramtstudierenden. Selbst erfahrene Pädagogen sind nach eigenen Aussagen kaum in der Lage, die komplexen Systemzusammenhänge angemessen zu durchdringen, geschweige denn in den Unterricht zu integrieren. Dies liegt zum Teil daran, dass der Klimawandel noch vor wenigen Jahren kein integraler Ausbildungsinhalt war.

Teacher Training and Education for Sustainable Development

Development and Evaluation of Teacher Training Modules at Rajshahi University and University of Education Freiburg

The educational system of Bangladesh is based on British traditions. During the last decades structures as well as curricula have been modified and further developed. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement of methodological and didactic qualifications of teachers in all educational fields. An institutionalized didactical and methodological training for lectures, teachers and researchers in Bangladesh is limited and merely exists within the framework of a general pedagogical education. Courses in subject-specific education and training in terms of a modern professional methodology are not yet established.   The aim of the project is to develop, offer and evaluate course modules for the didactics and methodology of Geography and other Environmental Sciences. These courses are supposed to be implemented as compulsory components into the curriculum of the partner universities. Due to the fundamental importance of all climate change related fields faculties at universities in Bangladesh offering specific research and teaching are moving more and more into a key position. GeoWindow. An interactive teaching and learning device for Earth Sciences.

The geowindow is an innovative, motivating, hands-on and analog learning tool. The tool allows to make processes of natural sciences visible and thus easy to understand for learners. Many dynamic processes take place under the surface of the geosphere, that is why it is particularly difficult to provide knowledge in a activity-oriented way. The geowindow has the power to visualize most of the "hidden" processes like ocean currents, groundwater flows, waves, slope failure, volcanic eruptions and many many more.
