Teaching the European Green Deal through role plays (EUTEG)

EUTEG is an ERASMUS+ project that develops role-plays and teacher trainings on European environmental and climate policies in the context of the European Green Deal.

The project addresses the challenge that EU environmental and climate regulations play a key role in tackling climate change but are often complex and rarely taught in a concrete and participatory way in schools. EUTEG focuses on strengthening teachers’ understanding of how the European Union functions, how environmental regulations are developed, and how they affect everyday life.

A central element of the project is the use of role plays (simulation games). Through role plays, participants experience European decision-making processes by taking on the roles of different stakeholders and engaging with competing interests, scientific knowledge, and political negotiation. This approach supports a deeper understanding of EU institutions, regulation-making, and democratic processes.

EUTEG develops role plays and teaching materials based on two policy areas of the European Green Deal:

  • the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and
  • the LULUCF Regulation (Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry).

The project targets pre-service teachers, teacher trainees, and in-service teachers across different subjects. It aims to enhance both content knowledge about EU environmental and climate regulations and pedagogical skills for teaching these topics in an interdisciplinary and practice-oriented way.
