Alexander von Humboldt – Multiperspective Approaches
Author: Prof. Dr. Gregor C. Falk
In research and teaching we encounter Alexander von Humboldt from different perspectives and in different disciplinary contexts. His contributions cover numerous topics in the earth sciences, but also in the life sciences - from geography, geobotany, climatology, palaeontology, oceanography, mineralogy and hydrogeology to the connections between human influences, erosion and climate change. He pioneered a modern, integrated Earth system science approach to deciphering, characterizing and modelling the various forcing factors and their feedback mechanisms. Humboldt's holistic approach goes far beyond a simple description and empirical data collection. Among other contributions, the publication project "Multiperspective Approaches" attempts to observe and critically analyse the relevance of this unique personality in a modern context, especially when discussing key ecological and social issues in the twenty-first century.
