Master's Degree Programmes
A Master's degree programme builds on a Bachelor's degree programme and usually ends with the award of a Master's degree. A master's degree is the second academic qualification that students can obtain after successfully completing a bachelor's degree programme.
There are two types of master's degree programme: 'consecutive' programmes, which can be taken directly after a bachelor's degree, and continuing education programmes, which require at least one year of professional experience.
Important information
All our Master's programmes can only be studied in German, so proficiency in the German language is essential. An exception is the continuing education MA E-LINGO, which is offered in English.
Teacher Training Degree Programmes
A teacher training degree is a course of study that prepares students for a career as a teacher. It provides the knowledge, skills and pedagogical competencies required for teaching in schools.
Teacher training degrees cover both subject knowledge and subject-specific teaching content. Students usually choose two or more subjects and learn how to prepare and deliver lessons in those subjects in a didactically appropriate manner.
Baden-Württemberg will continue to need highly qualified and committed teachers in the future. Teacher training therefore offers excellent career prospects. Those who decide to become teachers must usually complete a practical teaching component alongside their university degree.
Secondary Level 1 (FACE)
Thanks to your subject-specific teaching and educational knowledge and skills, as well as your practical school experience, you are familiar with the possibilities and needs of 11- to 16-year-old pupils and can contribute to their personal development, including their social skills.
Bilingual Education at Primary Level
Would you like to work with children aged 5 to 10, focusing on languages and Europe? By combining a target language (English or French) with a bilingual subject (e.g. teaching biology in English) and a compulsory semester abroad, you will acquire proven knowledge and skills in primary education and in two subjects of your choice.
Bilingual Education at Secondary Level 1
Would you like to become a secondary school teacher specialising in languages and Europe? By combining a target language (English or French) with a bilingual subject (e.g. biology in English) and a compulsory semester abroad [exceptions: second-degree applicants and foreign students (non-EU)], you will acquire proven knowledge and skills in bilingual teaching.
German-French Teacher Training at Primary Level
In the integrated primary school teacher training programme, you will study in both Freiburg and Alsace, acquire comprehensive intercultural skills, experience two different higher education and education systems, complete internships in both countries and experience the strong cohesion within a group of German and French students.
German-French Teacher Training at Secondary Level 1
In the integrated secondary school teaching degree programme, you will study in both Freiburg and Alsace, acquire comprehensive intercultural skills, experience two different higher education and education systems, complete internships in both countries and experience the strong cohesion within a group of German and French students.
Secondary School Teaching for Gymnasium (FACE)
Would you like to become a secondary school teacher at a ‘Gymnasium’? Then study the versatile 2-subject Bachelor's degree with teaching option at the University of Education and the Master of Education in Secondary School Teaching for Gymnasium at the University of Freiburg.

Nursing / Business and Social Services Management
Have you completed your training and studies in nursing and would now like to share your knowledge and skills with others? Here, you will learn how to plan, implement, analyse and further develop teaching and learning processes in the field of nursing in a theory-based manner. You will also explore the structures and challenges of the healthcare system, acquiring comprehensive skills in the process.
Social Pedagogy/Pedagogy and Psychology
This Master's programme gives you the opportunity to qualify for teaching at vocational schools and to teach in various types of vocational schools. The four-semester programme builds on the Bachelor's programmes in Early Childhood Education and Educational Science with a focus on social pedagogy. The new programme is also open to applicants with a closely related Bachelor's degree from other universities.

In addition to teacher training programmes, we offer educational science degree programmes that teach theories, methods and applications in their respective educational sciences as independent degree programmes.
Health / Business and Social Services Management
Have you completed a degree in health sciences, vocational education with a focus on healthcare or a similar field and would now like to share your knowledge and skills with others? Here, you will learn how to plan, implement, analyse and further develop teaching and learning processes in the field of nursing in a theory-based manner. You will also explore the structures and challenges of the healthcare system, acquiring comprehensive skills in the process.
Vocational Education – Textile Technology and Clothing / Business
This programme covers the fields of educational science with vocational and business education, subject-specific didactics in textile technology, and subject-specific knowledge and didactics in business. It also includes school placements at vocational schools. The programme equips you with the skills you need to design, implement, evaluate and further develop theory-based teaching and learning arrangements in companies within the textile and fashion industry and the textile crafts sector, as well as in vocational schools in the field of textile and fashion professions. It also prepares you for other tasks associated with teaching.
German as a Second and Foreign Language
The programme offers you a close integration of theory and practice, which also extends to interdisciplinary elements of study. This is reflected, for example, in the interlinking of teaching and professional internships with seminars and in practice-oriented examinations. The programme is designed to systematically develop your scientific working and research skills. To this end, current research topics and studies are discussed in the subject-specific parts of the programme.
Binational Master's Degree in German as a Foreign Language
The double master's degree in German as a Foreign Language (DaF) not only provides you with skills in the field of DaF in Germany, but also offers numerous application-oriented DaF experiences abroad. Since 2008, there has been a cooperation agreement with the Universidad de Antioquia (UdeA) in Medellín for joint training in German as a Foreign Language. This enables students to obtain a double degree from both universities.
MA E-LINGO Teaching English to Young Learners
E-LINGO is a two-year part-time Master's degree programme in a blended learning or online format that qualifies students to teach English to children. The international programme combines online courses with five two-day face-to-face or online events at the University of Education and offers excellent opportunities for professional development.
Educational Science Adult Education / Continuing Education or Social Work / Social -Pedagogy
The programme aims to equip students with the skills necessary for scientifically sound professional practice in adult education and social pedagogy. You will gain in-depth knowledge of scientific theories, knowledge bases and research methodology, as well as historical and international developments in the field and profession-specific discourse.
German-Italian Master’s in Educational Science Adult Education / Continuing Education
Adult education studies examine adult learning in a wide variety of contexts (e.g. continuing education institutions, social movements, workplace learning), but also analyse the structures of adult and continuing education. In addition to the micro-didactic level of teaching, the programme focuses on the planning of educational programmes through to their implementation, professional counselling, educational management, and the management of organisations and political decisions. Upon completion of this international Master's programme, you will receive a degree from both the University of Palermo and the University of Education Freiburg.
Health Education
This research-oriented programme provides in-depth knowledge and skills in the areas of evidence-based practice, research methods, evaluation and quality assurance/quality management. These form the basis for the development, implementation and evaluation of health education concepts in health promotion, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.
Elementary Music Education
Music in pre-school and primary education plays an important role in early childhood and school education. As a teacher, you will not only promote children's musical abilities, but also their social, emotional and cognitive skills. The programme is offered in cooperation with the University of Music Freiburg.
Teaching and School Development
This programme offers the chance to gain a further academic qualification while reflecting on your extensive practical experience in a scientific context. This allows you to develop your professional skills and academic abilities further. The programme therefore has a strong focus on science and research, providing a foundation for reflecting on your own practice.
Sustainability and Climate Education
Would you like to help inspire people to embrace sustainability and reduce their impact on the planet? Then this interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary degree programme is just right for you. Here, you will learn how to play an active role in tackling global issues such as climate change and the depletion of natural resources.
