The University of Education Freiburg is a higher education institution specialising in educational science, with the right to award doctorates and habilitations. It is responsible for basic research in the field of educational science, research-oriented teaching, scientific continuing education and the promotion of research careers.

The university's research focuses on empirical and theoretical educational research, as well as didactic development research. Particular emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary research into heterogeneity, the professionalism of educational staff, and education-oriented health and care research. The university has approximately 50 W3 professorships for subject-specific didactics and profession-oriented subject-specific studies in the natural sciences, cultural studies and social sciences, art, music and sport. It also has approximately 30 W3 professorships in educational sciences (educational science, psychology, special needs education, sociology), German as a second and foreign language, and education-oriented health and care research.

Members of the university work closely together, addressing interdisciplinary issues within the university, in Freiburg and in national and international research networks. This is reflected in the numerous programmes for structured academic career development, in which interdisciplinary teams conduct research on interdisciplinary issues. Our dedicated colleagues secure over 30% of the budget through third-party funding. These activities distinguish our university as the most productive University of Education in Baden-Württemberg in terms of research.

With its research projects, degree programmes and continuing education courses, its network of state seminars, training schools and kindergartens, and its cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, the Centre for School Quality and Teacher Training, the Institute for Educational Analysis Baden-Württemberg, the Freiburg Regional Council, the state education authorities and the city of Freiburg, our university has become the educational science centre of the Freiburg educational region. Its location in the trilateral Upper Rhine region, home to outstanding universities such as Freiburg and Basel, excellent universities of applied sciences such as the Offenburg University of Applied Sciences, church-run universities of applied sciences and the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, as well as numerous other high-calibre educational institutions such as the Freiburg University of Music, makes it an ideal location for a university of educational science. Through the inter-university School of Education FACE, we have particularly close ties with the University of Freiburg and the Freiburg University of Music.
