The Research Group Resilience and Sustainability in Education and Society brings together researchers from the University of Education Freiburg with scholars and practice partners from Germany and abroad at the intersection of education, sustainability, democracy, health, security, and societal transformation. It serves as an interdisciplinary research platform that fosters academic exchange on transformation processes and explores how these can be shaped through education, research, and knowledge transfer.

The group's central focus is on the question of how individuals and institutions can be empowered to respond constructively to crises, uncertainty, and profound societal change while actively contributing to shaping these transformation processes.

A particular emphasis is placed on the development of evidence-based educational and knowledge transfer concepts for children, adolescents, university students, professionals, leaders, and multipliers. The group examines individual competencies alongside organizational and societal resilience. Research topics such as health literacy, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), democratic participation, crisis preparedness, future competencies, and science communication are integrated within a common interdisciplinary research framework.

The research group aims to connect diverse scientific perspectives, develop innovative interdisciplinary research approaches, and establish long-term collaborations among universities, educational institutions, public organizations, and practice partners. It serves as an open forum for interdisciplinary dialogue and promotes the joint development of research projects, publications, and knowledge transfer initiatives.

At the same time, the group provides an institutional platform for preparing national and international research collaborations. It supports the development of joint third-party funded projects—from regional partnerships to large-scale European research initiatives—and contributes to translating scientific knowledge into meaningful impact for education, society, and public policy. Current research on resilience education, crisis preparedness, sustainable transformation, and democratic participation provides important starting points for these collaborations and is continuously advanced together with partners from academia and practice.

The research group sees itself as a long-term scientific network that combines research, knowledge transfer, and the promotion of early-career researchers. It provides a framework for collaborative grant applications, publications, doctoral projects, academic events, and research alliances, thereby contributing to the development of a resilient, sustainable, democratic, and health-promoting society.
