Course profile
Democrats are not born, democracy is not inherited, but must be lived and learned. But what should be taught in politics classes, and what consequences does this have for teacher training in political science at the University of Education in Freiburg?
Subject-specific topics
On the one hand, the subject focuses on relevant areas of political science and their profession-oriented specialization. Specifically, these are the various sub-disciplines of political theory and history of ideas, political systems and their comparison, and international relations. In addition, there are the focal points of the European Union and democracy.
Subject-specific teaching focus
The subject-specific teaching focus in research and teaching relates to political education research, subject-specific teaching/learning research, competence-oriented political education, political education concepts, democracy education, and the challenges for the school subject of politics in the respective school types. A special focus is placed on sustainability and education for sustainable development (ESD). Through its participation in the European Studies Teacher Training program, the Department of Political Science emphasizes interculturalism and European orientation, which are characteristic of Freiburg as an educational center within the Upper Rhine metropolitan region.
European Studies Teacher Training Program
The European Studies Teacher Training profile with the Eula Bachelor's and Master's programs supplements the basic course content with subject- and language-related bilingual teaching (English/German). This enables students to deepen their knowledge of the didactics of profession-oriented bilingual teaching in the subject of politics and in social studies.
