Department of Sociology
Welcome to the Department of Sociology!
The Department of Sociology understands itself as a place where teaching and research inspire engagement with social relations and developments, the constitution of institutions and organizations, and their effects on living conditions and life opportunities. The department deliberately refrains from dogmatic affiliation with any scientific or social theoretical school, as well as from preference for either qualitative or quantitative research methods.
In teaching, the department participates primarily in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Educational Science (BA, MA), Childhood Pedagogy (BA), Health Pedagogy (BA, MA), German as a Second/Foreign Language (BA, MA), as well as in the Master's program for all teaching disciplines. The role of sociology here is not to provide practical guidelines, but rather to enable informed and critical reflection on the preconditions, forms, and consequences of social interventions and pedagogical practice.
The research at the department encompasses empirical research projects as well as theoretical analyses. Theoretical analyses and empirical research projects are situated in areas including migration and refugee research, inequality, discrimination and racism research, social scientific health research, inclusion, gender and sexuality research, as well as knowledge orders of psychosocial professions. Empirical research is conducted predominantly within the framework of third-party funded projects financed by sources including the Baden-Württemberg Foundation, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Research Foundation, and the EU.
The department currently comprises 2 professorships and 3 research staff positions. Doctoral projects focusing on gender and health sociological questions are affiliated with the department, and dissertations are also being written at the newly founded Research Center for Sexuality.
