The University of Education does not offer English-Language Programs. All teaching except when studying a language, is conducted in German.

Learning German

We have a range of offers for people who wish to continue their education here and who need help with learning German:

The Language Center of the PH Freiburg regularly offers preparatory German courses (B2/C1) for refugees.

For admission to a German university, a university entrance qualification (HZB) recognized in Germany is required. Qualifications obtained abroad will be checked in advance for a fee via UNI-ASSIST (see information on the UNI-ASSIST procedure).

Proof of language proficiency: C1 (European reference framework). Proof of German language proficiency is normally provided by a DSH or TestDaF examination.

Studierendenwerk

The Studierendenwerk Freiburg offers advice on financing, discussion groups and psychological counseling, a social counseling service, as well as information on dormitories.

The Garantiefonds Hochschule offers general student counseling as well as advice on the recognition of certificates.

Special Information for Students from Ukraine

No tuition fees are charged for students from Ukraine with a residence title according to § 24 Residence Act (this includes Ukrainian nationals, stateless persons or nationals of other third countries who have enjoyed international protection or equivalent national protection in Ukraine before February 24, 2022 and are unable to return safely and permanently to their country or region of origin). Refugees from Ukraine (B2 German) can register for two semesters as guest students to acquire German language skills for regular enrollment on the side. However, ECTS transfer of the first year is then not possible. For detailed information, please contact Dr. Verena Bodenbender.

Offer for Teachers

Refugee teachers can register at the Freiburg School Office in the "Substitution Pool Online" (VPO).

Offers for Researchers from Ukraine

The Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts in Baden-Württemberg now offers a bridging fund for Ukrainian and international students and researchers who had to flee Ukraine. All state universities in Baden-Württemberg are eligible to apply. Specific information for refugees from Ukraine is provided by the DAAD National Academic Contact Point Ukraine.

The central website of the nine universities in Baden-Württemberg provides an overview of offers for students and researchers from Ukraine.

Volkswagen Foundation: Scientists at German universities and research institutes who would like to provide Ukrainian partners with a workplace in their research group or at their institute are invited to apply.

The Philipp Schwartz Initiative offers funding for researchers who are demonstrably at risk - regardless of their field or country of origin.

Universities and research institutions in Baden-Württemberg can apply to the Vector Foundation's call for applications for Ukrainian refugee researchers (PDF) together with the guest researcher to be admitted.

The German section of the global Scholars at Risk network is an association of German universities, research institutions and scientific organizations that are committed to supporting and protecting endangered researchers and scientific freedom.

Science for Ukraine provides information and practical support for Ukrainian researchers and students worldwide.
