Soil Music Project

Prof. Dr. Silke Schmid
Lisa Weidemann

The Soil Music project turns our gaze below ground—to the soil beneath our feet—as a vital ally in addressing the climate crisis and fostering positive futures (Illich, 1990). By enhancing soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration, even small gains in soil regeneration can significantly offset global emissions and curb warming (Uphoff & Thies, 2023).

Bridging regenerative ecology and musical-artistic practices, we introduce the Soil Music Paradigm: a transdisciplinary framework that uses immersive, co-creative interactions with soil to build eco-literacy, spark ecological imaginaries, and transform abstract utopian visions into tangible realities. Soil becomes both a physical resource and a metaphor for connection, trust, and planetary livelihood (Fremantle, 2009; S. Schmid, 2023).

Through rebellious, artivist methodologies, the project cultivates mental frameworks for societal change, raising awareness of social-ecological systems and guiding us from toxic trajectories toward life-supporting regeneration. Join us in this ethics of possibility for artistic, educational, and ecological renewal.“
